The Hoffman Estates Police Department is proud to participate in the Boy Scouts of America's "Law Enforcement Explorer Program." Since 1977, the Police Department has sponsored Explorer Post #806.
The members of the Explorer Post are young adults who aspire to careers in law enforcement. Police Officer Advisors train and give guidance to the Explorers in all nonhazardous functions of the Hoffman Estates Police Department. The Advisors generously donate their time, attending meetings at the Police Station every other Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Advisors also assist in the training and planning of future activities. Experienced Police Officers provide training in a variety of police-related skills, such as traffic accident investigations, handling domestic disputes, processing crime scenes, building searches, and arrest techniques.
In addition to their classroom training, the Explorers will ride in a squad car with a fulltime Police Officer to mentor them so they can learn various police functions and assist the Officer in nonhazardous situations. They also have the opportunity to perform the Power Test and Ability Test that will prepare them for the future testing to become a full time police officer.
Our goal as a Post is to send a team of explorers to attend a statewide or nationwide conference at which they participate in competitions, have the opportunity for developing new friendships, and learn valuable skills. Sworn Officers judge the member's knowledge of police procedures and their response to simulated police calls during the competitive phase.
The relationship between the Department and the Explorers directly benefits both the community and the individual Explorers. The community benefits through the hard work and volunteer activities of the Explorers, who provide a variety of public services to the community. For example, the Explorers assist sworn officers during the Village's annual Fourth of July Parade, Arts & Craft Fair, Northwest Fourth-Fest, and other community outreach events, like the Park District's Party in the Park.
The Explorer's participation and training benefits them by providing an excellent foundation for careers in law enforcement and by enabling them to become more responsible citizens. Several former members have gone on to become fulltime Police Officers with Police Departments in the area.
