MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Greetings!

Welcome to the Hoffman Estates Fire Department website. I hope it provides the information you are looking for.

Our department serves the Village of Hoffman Estates and a small portion of the Village of South Barrington. The department currently employs 100 fulltime personnel, 96 of whom are assigned to one of our four fire stations. On a daily basis, there is a minimum of 22 firefighters on duty to provide immediate response to fire and emergency medical incidents. In 2006, the department responded to 4,983 calls for assistance.

There are many services we provide, all of which center on making the community a safe place to live and work. I'd like to make you aware of two services we gladly offer to our residents:

  • Smoke Alarm Program: Firefighters will gladly assist residents in checking smoke alarms for proper installation and operation. Each of our fire companies also has a supply of smoke alarms and batteries allowing firefighters to install new smoke alarms or batteries if needed. There is no fee for this service.
  • CPR and AED Training: Certified instructors provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillation (AED) instruction during regularly scheduled classes. There is a $20 fee per person, per class. The fee covers all costs, including book fees.

If you would like to schedule either of these services, or have any questions or concerns, please contact our department at 847-843-4825.

Smoke detectors save lives. Is yours working? Why not check it now!

Sincerely,

Robert Gorvett
Acting Fire Chief

SAFETY MESSAGE

Have a sound fire escape plan

In the event of a fire, remember: time is the biggest enemy and every second counts! Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly. In less than 30 seconds, a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for a house to fill with thick, black smoke and become engulfed in flames.

Practice escape plans every month
The best plans have two ways to get out of each room. If the primary way is blocked by fire or smoke, you will need a second way out.

Immediately leave your home
When a fire occurs, do not waste any time saving property. Take the safest exit route. If you must escape through smoke, remember to crawl under the smoke and keep your mouth covered.

Never open doors that are hot
When you come to a closed door, use the back of your hand to feel the top of the door, the doorknob and the door frame to make sure that the fire is not on the other side.

Designate a meeting place outside and take attendance
Designate a meeting location away from the home. For example, meet at a specific location such as a tree, mailbox or at the end of the driveway. Make sure everyone has gotten out safely so that no one will be hurt looking for someone who is already safe.

Once out, stay out
Remember to escape first and then notify the fire department by calling 9-1-1. Never go back into a burning building for any reason. Teach children not to hide from firefighters.

Finally, having working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home dramatically increases your chances of survival. Smoke alarm batteries need to be tested every month and changed with new ones at least once a year.
